Exploring Thassos
Thassos: The Emerald Island
Why choose Thassos as a holiday destination?
- Beautiful beaches
- High mountains
- Forests and nature that challenge you for hiking
Thassos is the northernmost inhabited island of the Aegean Sea, with a circumference of about 100 km, and is located about 10 km from the coast of Eastern Macedonia.
The high mountains rising steeply from the sea at over 1200 metres, the lush green forests, the picturesque beaches and the authentic villages make Thassos one of the most beautiful and green islands of Greece, which has been largely spared from mass tourism.
In ancient times the Greeks worshipped the island. It was famous for its marble, gold and silver mines, wine, olives and timber. At that time there were 60,000 to 80,000 people living on the island, whereas today there are only about 13,000.
There are many archaeological sites to visit and a museum in Limenas.
